The first weekend in April, I panicked when a friend said I was really late getting a garden going – so the kids had fun planting some of the seeds for cucumbers, lettuce, corn and peas in two flats. I put one in a window and the other in the mudroom on a heating mat.
The inside flat sprouted much faster – the mudroom isn’t heated, and I don’t think the heat mat was able to keep up with the cold NH April. But finally, something has started to grow. I added two more flats of the fun purple seeds I bought from rareseeds.com – purple peppers, purple cauliflower, Thai eggplant, purple bok choy, and black beauty tomatoes. Again, I realized some flats were doing better than others – so now, I’ve started rotating the flats between locations.

Now, the pressure is on to build these growing seedlings a home. I did a mega shopping spree and Lowe’s delivered fencing, boards and corners for the raised beds. Plus a mountain of “supersoil” from Amherst Earth Products.

And hopefully someday soon, it will all be assembled into a garden.
Wish us luck!
